Volume I

A plain record of four PDF tools

Each of PDF Gear, Sejda PDF, PDF24 Tools and Foxit PDF Editor is entered below in the same format, so the entries can be read one against another.

Preface

A PDF fixes its layout so that it looks the same wherever it is opened. That stability is also why altering one needs dedicated software. The four entries differ chiefly in delivery: some run in a browser, some are installed, some are organised around tasks, and one is built as a wider suite.

The entries

Every entry states what the tool is, what its provider lists, and what to bear in mind.

PDF Gear

Entry 01Desktop and browser

PDF Gear brings reading, editing and file conversion together in one product. It exists as an application installed on a computer and as a version that runs inside a web browser, giving people two ways to reach the same kind of work. Typical uses include rewriting text or swapping images in a document, filling in forms, and turning PDFs into Word or Excel files. Text recognition covers scanned pages, and a batch mode converts multiple files at once.

Includes

  • Text, image and page editing
  • Text recognition for scans
  • Batch conversion

Notes

  • The desktop version must be installed
  • Certain functions ask for an account
  • Formats supported follow a fixed list

Sejda PDF

Entry 02Task-led

Sejda PDF starts from the job rather than the file: a person picks an action such as editing, merging, compressing or redacting, then adds a document to perform it. The service works online and also as a desktop program for Windows, macOS and Linux, with equivalent tools in each. Editing includes text, images and a whiteout feature, and documents can be imported from Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive. Each task carries a daily allowance and limits on size and page count.

Includes

  • Text and image editing with whiteout
  • Merge, split and compress
  • Redaction of sensitive details
  • Import from cloud storage

Notes

  • Daily allowance applies to each task
  • File size and page limits apply
  • Usually one file per task

PDF24 Tools

Entry 03Works offline

PDF24 Tools gathers a large set of PDF utilities that can be used online or through an application on Windows. A virtual printer driver is part of the package, allowing any program with a print option to output a PDF. Separate utilities handle conversion, merging, splitting and other adjustments. Since the offline application is limited to Windows, users on other systems depend on the online tools, and working without a connection requires installing the software first.

Includes

  • Virtual PDF printer
  • Windows desktop application
  • Many separate utilities

Notes

  • Offline version covers Windows only
  • The tool list is long to browse
  • Offline work needs prior installation

Foxit PDF Editor

Entry 04Full suite

Foxit PDF Editor is Foxit's platform for producing, editing, converting, signing and organising documents. Versions are available for Windows, macOS and the web, and a separate tier adds mobile and cloud apps. It covers text, image and page changes, conversion to and from Office formats, form handling, signatures, character recognition and version comparison. Features such as AI-assisted redaction are offered as add-ons, and the management tooling is aimed at larger organisations.

Includes

  • Text, image and page editing
  • Office format conversion
  • Forms and signatures
  • OCR and version comparison

Notes

  • Mobile and cloud sit in another tier
  • AI-assisted redaction is an add-on
  • Management tools suit organisations

Summary table

The four tools share a common core of tasks. This table notes which of them cover each one according to published feature lists. "Limited" means the task is covered more narrowly than by a dedicated feature.

Essays

Longer pieces look at securing documents, errors that emerge after editing, and how the nature of the work shapes the choice of tool.

Notes on sources

This record draws on publicly available information about what each tool generally offers. Features, platforms and limits change, so each provider's own documentation should be checked for current detail.
